Tremor
Essential tremor is a nerve disorder in which tremors (shakes) occur in a person who is moving or trying to move and no cause can be identified. All people have some degree of tremor during movement. This shaking normally involves mainly the hands. Stress, fatigue, anger, fear, caffeine and cigarettes may temporarily worsen this type of tremor.
Essential tremor is the most common form of abnormal tremor. Although the cause is unknown, new research shows that the part of the brain called the cerebellum does not appear to work correctly in patients with essential tremor. The cerebellum is the part of the brain that coordinates muscle movements.
Essential tremor is a relatively benign condition, affecting movement or voice quality, but with no other effects. It involves a rhythmic, moderately rapid tremor of voluntary muscles. Purposeful movements make the tremors worse, while avoiding hand movements may make tremors go away completely. People with essential tremors may have trouble holding or using small objects, such as silverware or a pen.
Over time, the tremors may affect hands, arms, head, voice box, eyelids, or other muscles. An essential tremor rarely involves the legs or feet.
There are several different types of essential tremors, including young-onset essential tremor and essential tremor with head tremor. These types differ in their response to treatment.
If an essential tremor occurs in more than one member of a family, it is called a familial tremor. It appears that genes play a role in the development of essential tremors. Not only have the tremors shown to be passed down through families, but an identical twin (who shares the same genes) of a person with essential tremor is twice as likely as a fraternal twin (who has different genes) to have essential tremor. Since some identical twins do not share this condition, environmental factors must also play a role.
Essential tremors occur at any age but are most common in people older than 65 years.
Symptoms of the Tremors
- May be occasional (sporadic), temporary (episodic) or occurring at intervals (intermittent).
- Occur at a rate of 6 to 10 oscillations / second.
- May affect the head, hands, arms, eyelids, voice.
- Less commonly affects the legs and feet.
- May not affect both sides of body equally.
- Worsen with voluntary movement or emotional stress.
- Disappear during sleep.
- Typically improves with alcohol.
Role of Noni in Tremor
Noni has a broad range of health benefits against various diseases and complaints. The constituents are given elsewhere in the monograph.
How Noni works ?
The natural integrity of Noni is only part of the reason for its effectiveness. There are two additional reasons contributing to Noni's effectiveness for a broad range of conditions :
1. Unique Combinations of Substances
Noni has an impressive combination of ingredients. It has a rich complement of vitamins and minerals; including vitamins A, B (including the rare B-12), C, E, Iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, zinc and several trace minerals. Noni also has 17 of 20 amino acids. Terpenes, fungicides, adaptogens, glycosides, polysaccharides and other unique ingredients that even in small amounts can have significant physiological effects. Studies show that NONI stimulates the immune system, regulates proper cell function, increases ability of cells to absorb and utilize nutrients, inhibits tumor growth, and regenerates damaged cells. Probably the most unique ingredient is an alkaloid called xeronine. Xeronine has several important functions including regulating many proteins in the body, activating inactive enzymes and improving cellular function. Noni also contains a substance called proxeronine, stored in the liver according to Dr. Ralph Heinecke. Proxeronine, in turn, can be used to make xeronine, as needed.
2. Synergy of its Substances
The many known, and even a few of the unknown substances, come together in a way that supports needs of many of our internal systems, concurrently. As the word synergy implies, these substances work far better in combination than they do separately. Many of the ingredients in Noni are found in varying amounts in other foods or herbs. There seems to be no known food or herb with either rich list of substances or high amounts of key substances all put together in one super food. Noni aids the body's natural healing abilities.
Antioxidant property of Noni
Endogenous antioxidants and role of Noni : Our body has evolved with endogenous defense mechanisms to protect against free radical induced cell damage. Glutathione peroxidase, catalase and Superoxide dismutases are three primary antioxidant enzymes in our body, which involved in direct elimination of free radicals or reactive oxygen species from our body. They require micronutrients like selenium, iron, copper, zinc and manganese as cofactors for their formation and optimum catalytic and effective antioxidant activity. Noni contains all the trace minerals that help for optimum catalytic activity of those three important antioxidant enzymes for an effective antioxidant defense mechanism.
Glutathione, ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene, bilirubin, selenium, dihydrolipoic acid, reduced CoQ10, melatonin, uric acid etc., as a whole play a homoeostatic or protective role against ROS produced during normal cellular metabolism and after active oxidation insult. Noni contains all the above phyto chemicals and vitamins in abundant quantity. Glutathione (GSH) is the most significant component which directly quenches Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) like lipid peroxides and plays major role in xenobiotic metabolism. Glutathione is a tripeptide made up of amino acids gamma-glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. Noni contains all those glutathione making amino acids in abundance. Noni increases the body's glutathione level. Noni stimulates more melatonin secretion from pineal body. It also maintains ascorbate (vitamin C) and alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E), in their reduced form, which also exert an antioxidant effect by quenching free radicals.
Exogenous antioxidants : Contributions from Noni : A number of dietary antioxidants known as phytonutrients or phytochemicals are increasingly appreciated for their antioxidant activity. One example is flavonoids which are a group of polyphenolic compounds. They are responsible for the different brilliant colors like blue, scarlet and orange. Noni contains 150 and above phytochemicals including all flavonoids. Flavonoids exhibit several biological effects like antitumoural, anti-ischaemic, anti-allergic, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-ulcerative and anti inflammatory activities. These also inhibit activities of several bad enzymes like lipoxygenase, cyclooxygenase, monooxygenase, xanthine oxidase, glutathione-S transferase, mitochondrial succino-oxidase and protein kinases. Many of the biological activities of flavonoids are attributed to their antioxidant properties and free radical scavenging capabilities. Noni is rich in with many flavonoids.
