Sjogren Syndrome
or next 8 months. Sjogren syndrome is a systemic inflammatory disorder characterized by dry mouth, decreased tearing and other dry mucous membranes. It is often associated with autoimmune rheumatic disorders. The cause of Sjogren syndrome is unknown. The syndrome occurs most often in women 40 to 50 years old. It is rare in children. Pediatric patients usually present with another autoimmune disorder before developing the signs of Sjogren syndrome. Dryness of the eyes and mouth are the most common symptoms of this syndrome. They may occur alone or with symptoms associated with rheumatoid arthritis or other connective tissue diseases. There may be an associated enlargement of the salivary glands. Other organs may become affected. The syndrome may be associated with rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, polymyositis and other diseases. Sjogren syndrome affects 3% of the population.
Symptoms
- Dry or itching eyes
- Dryness of the mouth
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Loss of sense of taste
- Severe dental cavities
- Hoarseness
- Fatigue
- Joint pain or joint swelling
- Swollen glands
- Cloudy cornea
Role of Noni
Noni contains all the vitamins like vitamin A , vitamin B complex, vitamin C and vitamin E. It contains all the trace minerals. A number of major components have been identified in the Noni plant like scopoletin, octoanoic acid, potassium, vitamin C, terpenoids, alkaloids, anthraquinones (such as nordamnacanthal, morindone, rubiadin, and rubiadin-1-methyl ether, anthraquinone glycoside), sitosterol, carotene, vitamin A, flavone glycosides, linoleic acid, Alizarin, amino acids, acubin, L-asperuloside, caproic acid, caprylic acid, ursolic acid, rutin and a putative proxeronine.
N-acetyl Cysteine : N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a specially modified form of the dietary amino acid cysteine. It is found in Noni. When taken orally, it helps body make important antioxidant enzyme glutathione. It is also thought to help loosen secretions, and for this reason it is tried as a treatment for Sjogren’s syndrome. Noni helps in Sjogren’s syndrome.
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid in the omega-six family, is tried as a treatment for the fatigue often associated with Sjogren’s. However, in a 6-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 90 people, use of GLA failed to prove more effective than placebo. One small double-blind study, however, found that a combination of GLA and the omega-six fatty acid linoleic acid (found in many vegetable oils) improves eye symptoms in Sjogren’s. Noni contains the Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).
How Noni works ?
The natural integrity of Noni is only part of the reason for its effectiveness. There are two additional reasons contributing to Noni’s effectiveness for a broad range of conditions :
1.Unique Combinations of Substances
2.Synergy of its Substances
Dr. Ralph Heinicke, states that the Noni fruit contains a natural precursor for Xeronine that he named Proxeronine. Proxeronine is converted to the alkaloid, Xeronine, in the body by an enzyme he calls Proxeroninase. His hypothesis is that Xeronine is able to modify the molecular structure of proteins. Thus Xeronine has a wide range of biological activities. When a protein like an enzyme, receptor or signal transducer is not in the appropriate conformation, it will not work properly. Xeronine will interact with the protein and make it fold into its proper conformation. The result is a properly functioning protein. Whenever a problem arises in the cell due to a protein structural problem, Xeronine’s presence would be beneficial. His hypotheses explain why Noni can help in many health problems in different ways.
