Neurosarcoidosis
Neurosarcoidosis is a complication of sarcoidosis involving inflammation and abnormal deposits in the tissues of the nervous system (which includes brain, spinal cord, and other nerves).
Causes, Incidence and Risk factors
Sarcoidosis is a chronic disorder that affects many body systems. The majority of cases involve lungs but the condition affects any area of body.
Sarcoidosis is characterized by an abnormal immune system response that produces deposits of white blood cells and abnormal tissue cells in the affected organ. A small percentage of cases will involves some portion of nervous system (neurosarcoidosis).
Neurosarcoidosis affects any part of nervous system. Sudden transient facial palsy (facial weakness) is common with involvement of cranial nerve VII. Any nerve can be affected, including nerves of eye and nerves that control taste, smell or hearing.
The condition can also affect a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, involved in regulating many body functions like temperature, sleep and stress responses.
Muscle weakness or sensory losses occur with peripheral nerve involvement. Other areas the brain or spinal cord may also be involved. Neurosarcoidosis can cause permanent disability and, in some cases, death.
Symptoms : Involvement of the pituitary gland causes :
- High urine output
- Excessive thirst
- Changes in menstrual periods
- Excessive tiredness (fatigue)
- Involvement of the brain or cranial nerves:
- Facial palsy (weakness, drooping)
- Dementia or delirium
- Confusion, disorientation
- Loss of memory, judgment or calculation skills
- Psychiatric disturbances (any)
- Seizures
- Headache
- Loss of sense of smell
- Loss of sense of taste, abnormal tastes
- Decreased hearing
- Vision abnormalities
- Dizziness or vertigo (abnormal sensation of movement)
- Speech impairment
- Involvement of one or more peripheral nerves:
- Loss of sensation in any body part
- Abnormal sensations in any body part
- Loss of movement of any body part (joint stiffness)
- Weakness of any body part
Role of Noni
Noni has a broad range of health benefits for various diseases and complains.
Noni contains all the vitamins like vitamin A , vitamin B complex, vitamin C and vitamin E. It contains all the trace minerals. A number of major components are identified in the Noni plant such as scopoletin, octoanoic acid, potassium, vitamin C, terpenoids, alkaloids, anthraquinones (such as nordamnacanthal, morindone, rubiadin, and rubiadin-1-methyl ether, anthraquinone glycoside), sitosterol, carotene, vitamin A, flavone glycosides, linoleic acid, Alizarin, amino acids, acubin, L-asperuloside, caproic acid, caprylic acid, ursolic acid, rutin and a putative proxeronine.
Antioxidant property of Noni
Free radical damage may be the one cause of this disorder. Noni helps a lot as it is an effective antioxidant
Endogenous antioxidants and role of Noni : Our body has evolved with endogenous defense mechanisms to protect against free radical induced cell damage. Glutathione peroxidase, catalase and Superoxide dismutases are three primary antioxidant enzymes in our body, which are involved in direct elimination of free radicals or reactive oxygen species from our body. They require micronutrient like selenium, iron, copper, zinc and manganese as cofactors for their formation and optimum catalytic and effective antioxidant activity. Noni contains all the trace minerals that help for optimum catalytic activity of those three important antioxidant enzymes for an effective antioxidant defense mechanism.
Glutathione, ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene, bilirubin, selenium, dihydrolipoic acid, reduced CoQ10, melatonin, uric acid etc., as a whole, play a homoeostatic or protective role against ROS produced during normal cellular metabolism and after active oxidation insult. Noni contains all the above phyto chemicals and vitamins in abundant quantity. Glutathione (GSH) is the most significant component which directly quenches Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) such as lipid peroxides and plays major role in xenobiotic metabolism. Glutathione is a tripeptide made up of the amino acids gamma-glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. Noni contains all those glutathione making amino acids in abundant number. Thus Noni increases the body’s glutathione level. Noni stimulates more melatonin secretion from the pineal body. It also maintains ascorbate (vitamin C) and alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E), in their reduced form, which also exert an antioxidant effect by quenching free radicals.
Exogenous antioxidants : Contribution from Noni : A number of other dietary antioxidants known as phytonutrients or phytochemicals are being increasingly appreciated for their antioxidant activity. One example is flavonoids which are a group of polyphenolic compounds. They are responsible for different brilliant colors like blue, scarlet and orange. Noni contains 150 and above phytochemicals including all flavonoids. Flavonoids exhibit several biological effects like antitumoural, anti-ischaemic, anti-allergic, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-ulcerative and anti inflammatory activities. These inhibit activities of several bad enzymes like lipoxygenase, cyclooxygenase, monooxygenase, xanthine oxidase, glutathione-S transferase, mitochondrial succino-oxidase and protein kinases. Many of the biological activities of flavonoids are attributed to their antioxidant properties and free radical scavenging capabilities. Noni is rich in many flavonoids.
How Noni works ?
The natural integrity of Noni is only part of the reason for its effectiveness. There are two additional reasons contributing to Noni’s effectiveness for a broad range of conditions :
Unique Combinations of Substances
Synergy of its Substances.
