Muscular Dystrophy
Maternal and fetal malnutrition are fundamental causes of muscular dystrophy (MD). It is very difficult to know for sure if a birth defect is result of genetics or environmental factors. The mother represents half of a developing baby’s heredity, but almost all of developing baby’s environment. Every single cell in a baby is the product of inherited DNA instruction. Every single cell in a baby is also the product of mother’s diet. Ova (human eggs) are formed during fetal stage of a female’s life. In other words, all of a woman’s own eggs are actually formed while she was developing inside her mother, before she herself was born. This means that what your grandmother ate significantly contributed to your anatomy. What looks to be purely a genetic problem may in fact be a largely a nutritional one.
The good news is that if nutrient deficiency cause an illness, nutrient therapy ameliorates, or even cures, that illness. Genes are “turned on or off” by one or more nutrients. This is important knowledge as we try to understand individual differences affect our nutrient needs and tolerances. We need to know how what we eat affect the phenotypic expression of our own particular genotype.
The important interrelationship between food and the genes was first called the “genetotrophic concept” by Dr. Roger J. Williams, PhD. Dr. Williams, the discoverer of B-vitamin pantothenic acid, explained in his books and scientific papers how existing biochemical birth defects may be effectively overcome with optimum nutrition. In genetotrophic diseases, genetic abnormality leads to nutritional disability. To compensate, the body requires availability of larger than normal quantities of one or more nutrients for affected gene to successfully express itself. For that particular person, normal dietary vitamin intakes are quite inadequate for normal function.
Muscular dystrophy (MD) constitutes a good example of a genetotrophic disease. Rather than a nutrient deficiency, MD may more exactly be considered to be a genetically-influenced nutrient dependency.
Noni is a natural nutritional supplement, for cellular nutrition. Noni in regards to MD, may help as it contains all the vitamins in natural form, all the trace minerals, 17 amino acids and besides that 150 and above phytonutrients. The synergistic action of all those ingredients present in Noni helps in many ways in various diseases and Muscular Dystrophy is one among them.
Coenzyme Q10 : Most young people make CoQ10 in their bodies, but a youngster with muscular dystrophy may either make too little or have a bigger requirement because of the illness. It is established that heart muscle greatly benefits from CoQ10 supplementation. Cardiac disease is commonly associated with virtually every form of muscular dystrophy and myopathy.
Vitamin E, C, and B6 : It was recognized more than fifty years ago that a low intake of vitamin E leads to muscular dystrophy. The evidence about the involvement of vitamins E and C as well as B6 and other vitamins in the functioning of muscles suggests that the optimum intake of these nutrients should be of value to patients.
The peculiar muscular degeneration of muscular dystrophy in animals is only caused by lack of vitamin E. Human muscular dystrophy shows identically the same peculiar degeneration. The key to the cure of muscular dystrophy is vitamin E. (Rabinovitch et al 1951). Synthetic vitamin E will not work. It has to be the natural “D-alpha” form, preferably from Noni. The vitamin-E-friendly mineral selenium, ideally, is found in Noni. Noni is rich in all vitamins and trace elements. It may give a remarkable result in the condition of Muscular dystrophy. There are evidence of the patients of MD showing symptomatic improvement after taking Noni.
Selenium : Blood levels of selenium are reduced in muscular dystrophy. Myotonic dystrophy and all its major symptoms (including muscle dystrophy) can be cured or prevented in animals by selenium supplementation. The essential trace mineral selenium works closely with vitamin E and helps the body to get more out of less of the vitamin. This important biochemical partnership, or synergy, only works if both nutrients are present. Noni contains all the Vitamins including Vitamin E in natural form and lot of trace minerals including selenium. The synergy of the ingredients present in Noni plays a vital role in many diseases and also in MD.
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in Noni
Recently, scientists in Switzerland published the results of a study conducted on mouse models of MD. These “mdx” mices were fed ordinary chow-chow containing major bioactive polyphenol compound, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). After feeding the animals for either one or five weeks, the researchers examined the rodents’ muscle tissue microscopically for signs of damage associated with the progression of their MD-like disease. “Diet supplementation containing EGCG protected muscle against the first massive wave of necrosis and stimulated muscle adaptation toward a stronger and more resistant phenotype,” concluded the Swiss researchers (Dorchies et al. 2006).
Noni contains the polyphenols, (EGCG), known to be powerful antioxidants. Because inflammation is involved in the degradation of muscle tissue in MD, oxidative stress plays a role in this process. Noni improves MD prognosis by reducing this oxidative stress. Noni also reduces the oxidative stress in muscle cells.
Role of Noni in Nephrotic Syndrome
Nephrotic syndrome is a group of symptoms including protein in the urine (exceeding 3.5 g/ day), low blood protein levels, high cholesterol levels and swelling (edema). The urine may also contain fat, visible under the microscope.
Causes, Incidence and Risk factors
Nephrotic syndrome is caused by various disorders that damage the kidneys, particularly the basement membrane of the glomerulus. This immediately causes abnormal excretion of protein in the urine.
The most common cause in children is minimal change disease, while membranous glomerulonephritis is the most common cause in adults.
This condition can also occur as a result of infection, drug exposure, malignancy (cancer), hereditary disorders, immune disorders, or diseases that affect multiple body systems including diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple myeloma and amyloidosis. It can accompany kidney disorders, including glomerulonephritis, focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis and mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis.
Nephrotic syndrome affects all age groups. In children, it is the most common from age 2 to 6. This disorder occurs slightly more often in males than females.
Symptoms
- Swelling (edema ) generally around the eyes in the extremities, especially the feet and ankles.
- Swollen abdomen
- Facial swelling
- Foamy appearance of the urine
- Weight gain (unintentional) from fluid retention
- Poor appetite
- High blood pressure
Role of Noni
Biological effects of oxidative stress in nephrotic syndrome : Formation of ROS is part of the unspecific defense system of an organism against bacteria and other microbes. ROS may also affect cells of the host organism, in particular at sites of inflammation. The latter plays a role in a variety of renal diseases, like glomerulonephritis, acute or progressive renal failure, or tubulointerstitial nephritis, nephrotic syndrome - contributing, for example to proteinuria. ROS (reactive oxygen species) also to contribute to pathogenesis of ischaemia-reperfusion injury. Furthermore, due to their impact on cell cycle regulation, oxygen radicals may contribute to hypertrophy of tubular cells.
Noni contains all the antioxidant vitamins, many flavonoids, all trace elements and thus acts as a powerful antioxidants.
Endogenous antioxidants and role of Noni : Our body has evolved with endogenous defense mechanisms to protect against free radicals induced cell damage. Glutathione peroxidase, catalase and Superoxide dismutases are three primary antioxidant enzymes in our body, which involved in direct elimination of free radicals or reactive oxygen species from our body. They require micronutrients like selenium, iron, copper, zinc and manganese as cofactors for their formation and optimum catalytic and effective antioxidant activity. Noni contains all the trace minerals that help for optimum catalytic activity of those three important antioxidant enzymes for an effective antioxidant defense mechanism.
Glutathione, ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene, bilirubin, selenium, dihydrolipoic acid, reduced CoQ10, melatonin and uric acid as a whole play a homoeostatic or protective role against ROS produced during normal cellular metabolism and after active oxidation insult. Noni contains all the above phytochemicals and vitamins in abundant quantity. Glutathione (GSH) is the most significant component which directly quenches Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) such as lipid peroxides and plays major role in xenobiotic metabolism. Glutathione is a tripeptide made up of amino acids gamma-glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. Noni contains all those glutathione making amino acids in abundant number. Thus Noni increases the body’s glutathione level. Noni stimulates more melatonin secretion from pineal body. It also maintains ascorbate (vitamin C) and alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E), in their reduced form, which also exerts an antioxidant effect by quenching free radicals.
Exogenous antioxidants: Contribution from Noni
A number of other dietary antioxidants known as phytonutrients or phytochemicals that are being increasingly appreciated for their antioxidant activity. One example is flavonoids which are a group of polyphenolic compounds. They are responsible for the different brilliant colors such as blue, scarlet and orange. Noni contains 150 and above phytochemicals including flavonoids. Flavonoids exhibit several biological effects like antitumoural, anti-ischaemic, anti-allergic, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-ulcerative, and anti inflammatory activities. These are also known to inhibit activities of several bad enzymes like lipoxygenase, cyclooxygenase, monooxygenase, xanthine oxidase, glutathione-S transferase, mitochondrial succino-oxidase, and protein kinases. Many of the biological activities of flavonoids are attributed to their antioxidant properties and free radical scavenging capabilities. Noni is rich in many flavonoids.
Immune disorder cause of nephrotic syndrome
Noni acts like an immune modulator. It contains all the vitamins, trace minerals, almost all amino acids, besides that 150 and above phytochemicals or micronutrients. Xeronine is the alkaloid of Noni. Hence if a child is using Noni for its nephrotic syndrome then it may help as it is a natural powerful food supplement.
Major components : Noni contains all the vitamins like vitamin A , vitamin B complex, vitamin C and vitamin E. It contains all the trace minerals. A number of major components are identified in the Noni plant like scopoletin, octoanoic acid, potassium, vitamin C, terpenoids, alkaloids, anthraquinones (such as nordamnacanthal, morindone, rubiadin, and rubiadin-1-methyl ether, anthraquinone glycoside), sitosterol, carotene, vitamin A, flavone glycosides, linoleic acid, Alizarin, amino acids, acubin, L-asperuloside, caproic acid, caprylic acid, ursolic acid, rutin and a putative proxeronine.
How Noni works ?
The natural integrity of Noni is only part of the reason for its effectiveness. There are two additional reasons contributing to Noni’s effectiveness for a broad range of conditions:
- Unique Combinations of Substances
- Synergy of its Substances
Antibacterial activity : Acubin, L-asperuloside and alizarin in Noni fruit, and some other anthraquinone compounds in Noni roots, are all proven antibacterial agents. These compounds fight against infectious bacterial strains such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus morgaii, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella and Shigela. These antibacterial elements within Noni are responsible for treatment of skin infections, colds, fevers, and other bacterial-caused health problems.
