Gum diseases

Gum diseases are characterized by inflammation and bleeding of gums. Gum disease is also known as periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is an infection of tissues and bone that support the teeth. Untreated gum disease can become very serious, causing teeth to become loose or fall out.

Gum disease is usually caused by a buildup of plaque, an invisible sticky layer of germs that form naturally on the teeth and gums. Plaque contains bacteria, which produce toxins that irritate and damage the gums.

Hundreds of types of bacteria live in our mouth, and keeping plaque at bay is a constant battle. That’s why brushing and flossing every day - and regular trips to the dentist - are so important. Certain things can make teens more likely to develop gum disease. Some may inherit this tendency from their parents. The snacks you eat can also put you at risk of developing gum disease - especially if you grab fries and a soda in the mall after school and are not able to brush immediately after eating them. You probably know that sugar is bad for your teeth, but you may not know that starchy foods like fries also feed the acids that eat into your tooth enamel. Gum diseases include swelling and bleeding of the gums, bad breath, or a bad taste in your mouth. Good teeth-brushing and flossing can reverse the affects of gingivitis. Periodontitis occurs when bacterial toxins and enzymes destroy the connective tissue and bone. The gums draw back and the roots of the teeth are exposed. The teeth may become very sensitive to temperature changes, or new cavities can develop.

Role of Noni

Noni, a vital nutrient supplement needed by every cell in the body to make energy, is beneficial for a variety of diseases and disorders, including periodontal disease. In addition to energy production, Noni plays a vital role as an antioxidant at the cellular level by neutralizing free radicals. Noni helps reverse gum disease naturally.

Calcium : A study found that people who do not consume adequate amounts of calcium each day are at significantly higher risk for periodontal disease. The study showed that men and women who had low calcium intakes (below the recommended dietary allowance) were almost twice as likely to have periodontal disease, as measured by the loss of attachment of the gums to the teeth. Noni contains high calcium in natural form.

Folic Acid : Studies demonstrated that folic acid is very effective in preserving gum tissue and reducing the risk of gingivitis and periodontitis. Although the benefits of oral folic acid in protecting against heart disease and birth defects are well documented, new evidence suggests that using folic acid topically (as a mouthwash) can also strengthen one’s oral defenses. Studies demonstrated folic acid’s ability to improve gingivitis symptoms, reduce gum tissue’s inflammatory response, and make gum tissue more resilient to irritants such as bacteria and plaque. Noni contains folic acid and all vitamins in natural form. Folic acid has been clinically tested in mouthwash solutions to assess its benefit in treating gingivitis. Hence mouth wash with Noni may help in gum diseases.

Noni  is rich with the antioxidants epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and that combat oral plaque and bacteria. Noni works as anti-plaque agent by suppressing glucosyl transferase, which oral bacteria use to feed on sugar. Noni kills oral bacteria and inhibits collagenase activity. Collagenase, a natural enzyme that becomes overactive in presence of bacterial overgrowth, can destroy healthy collagen in gum tissue. Noni has astringent, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties

Noni applied topically inhibits Streptococcus mutans bacteria, which have been implicated in the development of dental caries (the decay and breaking down of teeth and their bone support).

Vitamin C : People deficient in vitamin C may be at risk of developing gingivitis. In one study, a group of subjects with periodontal disease who normally consumed only 25 to 30 mg of vitamin C daily were supplemented with an additional 70 mg. They experienced marked improvement in gum tissue after only six weeks. Noni contains abundant quantity of this antioxidant vitamin C.

Noni also has antibacterial property. Many ingredients present in Noni have antibacterial properties.
