Constipation, IBS and Digestive disorders
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a condition that causes upset intestines for a long period of time. It is very unpleasant to the sufferer but tends to be harmless and usually does not lead to more serious complaints. The symptoms vary from person to person and from day to day.
Causes
The walls of the intestines are lined with layers of muscle that contract and relax as they move food from our stomach through our intestinal tract to our rectum. Normally, these muscles contract and relax in a coordinated rhythm. But if there occurs irritable bowel syndrome, the contractions are stronger and last longer than normal. Food is forced through our intestines more quickly, causing gas, bloating and diarrhea. In some cases, however, the opposite occurs. Food passage slows and stools become hard and dry.
Some researchers believe IBS is caused by changes in the nerves that control sensation or muscle contractions in bowel. Others believe the central nervous system affects the colon. Women are two to three times as likely as men to have IBS, researchers believe that hormonal changes also play a role. Also, many women find that signs and symptoms are worse during or around their menstrual periods.
Triggers for IBS : Triggers for IBS range from gas or pressure on our intestines to certain foods, medications or emotions. For example:
Foods : Many people find that their signs and symptoms worsen when they eat certain foods. For instance, chocolate, milk and alcohol might cause constipation or diarrhea. A survey found that almost two out of three people with IBS felt a dietary allergy or intolerance was to blame for their IBS. The role of food allergy or intolerance in irritable bowel syndrome has not been well studied. Some researchers suspect that rather than food being a trigger, the actual process of eating may be the trigger because chewing stimulates the colon.
Stress : If you are like most people with IBS, you probably find that your signs and symptoms are worse or more frequent during stressful events, such as a change in your daily routine or family arguments. But while stress may aggravate symptoms, it does not cause them.
Constipation
Causes of Constipation
Diet :
The most common cause of constipation is a diet low in fiber found in vegetables, fruits and whole grains and high in fats found in cheese, eggs and meats. People who eat plenty of high-fiber foods are less likely to become constipated. Fiber -- soluble and insoluble -- is the part of fruits, vegetables and grains that the body cannot digest. Soluble fiber dissolves easily in water and takes on a soft, gel-like texture in the intestines. Insoluble fiber passes almost unchanged through the intestines. The bulk and soft texture of fiber help prevent hard, dry stools that are difficult to pass.
Not Enough Liquids :
Liquids like water and juice add fluid to the colon and bulk to stools, making bowel movements softer and easier to pass. People who have problems with constipation should drink enough of water every day, about 12 to 16 glasses of water
Lack of Exercise :
Lack of exercise leads to constipation, although doctors do not know precisely why.
Medications :
Pain medications (especially narcotics), antacids that contain aluminum, antispasmodics, antidepressants, iron supplements, diuretics, and anticonvulsants for epilepsy can slow passage of bowel movements.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) :
Some people with IBS also known as spastic colon, have spasms in the colon that affect bowel movements. Constipation and diarrhea often alternate and abdominal cramping, gassiness and bloating are other common complaints. Although IBS produces lifelong symptoms, it is not a life-threatening condition. It often worsens with stress.
Changes in Life or Routine :
People often become constipated when traveling because their normal diet and daily routines are disrupted.
Abuse of Laxatives :
Myths about constipation have led to a serious abuse of laxatives. This is common among older adults who are preoccupied with having a daily bowel movement.
Laxatives usually are not necessary and can be habit-forming. The colon begins to rely on laxatives to bring on bowel movements. Over time, laxatives can damage nerve cells in the colon and interfere with the colon's natural ability to contract. For the same reason, regular use of enemas can also lead to a loss of normal bowel function.
Ignoring the Urge to Have A Bowel Movement :
People who ignore the urge to have a bowel movement may eventually stop feeling the urge, which can lead to constipation. Some people delay having a bowel movement because they do not want to use toilets outside the home. Others ignore the urge because of emotional stress or because they are too busy. Children may postpone having a bowel movement because of stressful toilet training or because they do not want to interrupt their play.
Specific Diseases :
Diseases that cause constipation include neurological disorders, metabolic and endocrine disorders and systemic conditions that affect organ systems. These disorders can slow the movement of stool through the colon, rectum or anus.

Soluble fiber helps both diarrhaea and constipation. Pectin is a soluble fiber that is rich in Noni. Hence Noni helps a lot in case of IBS
NONI is rich in soluble fibers. Hence it helps in rectifying problem of constipation
Noni contains the substance pectin. Pectin is classified as a soluble fiber. It is found abundant in NONI. Pectin helps with constipation and brings fibers into the body.
