Chronic Cough
If you have a cough for more than three weeks, it is considered a chronic cough. "Chronic" describes something that lasts for a long time. Chronic cough is one of the most common reasons for family doctor visits. Although it is a common health problem, chronic cough is not something to ignore. Untreated chronic cough interferes with daily activities and make sleeping and eating difficult. A chronic cough could also signal a serious lung disease. Fortunately, the cause of chronic cough can usually be identified and treated.
Causes of Chronic Cough
- Some of the most common causes of chronic cough include :
- Postnasal drip syndrome (mucus that drips down the throat from the back of the nose- it's usually triggered by allergies)
- Asthma
- Bronchitis
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (sometimes called GERD or acid reflux- a condition in which acid from the stomach backs up into your throat)
- Side effects of ACE inhibitors (medicines used to treat high blood pressure)
- Viral infections
- Smoking or a lung disease caused by smoking
- Or a combination of these causes
In rare cases, diseases like tuberculosis or cancer of lungs or oesophagus cause chronic cough.
Role of Noni in Chronic Cough
Antioxidants, which combat free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, are important weapons in the fight against respiratory infections. During an infection, the immune system is activated into producing inflammatory cytokines and increasing free radical production. The oxidative stress caused by increased free radical production enhances inflammation already present, leading to a self-reinforcing cycle of inflammation and free radical production. Noni has strong antioxidants property as it contains all the antioxidant vitamins, all essential trace minerals and lots of phytochemicals. Those phytochemicals have effective antioxidant properties
Vitamin C : Although a few clinical trials have addressed antioxidants and acute bronchitis, it is logical that people suffering from inflammation of the bronchi and elevated free radical damage would benefit from a strong antioxidant defense. There is also good evidence that vitamin C interferes with viral infections at the first sign of symptoms, thus reducing one's risk of developing acute bronchitis. Noni contains rich amount of Vitamin C.
Vitamin E : Evidences from animal and human studies also show that vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, plays an important role in the maintenance of immune system. Even marginal deficiencies in vitamin E predisposes individuals to viral infections by reducing immune response. Therefore, supplying the body with additional antioxidants could reduce oxidative stress and enhance immune function . A recent review proposed that supplementation with antioxidants improves or exerts a protective effect on lung health. Noni contains Vitamin E.
Noni also helps to synthesize more glutathione in our body. Glutathione is an important internal antioxidant. It boosts the antioxidant levels and dissolves mucus in people suffering from respiratory ailments.
Anti inflammatory property of Noni
The defining feature of acute bronchitis is inflammation that produces symptoms. Noni has the effective anti-inflammatory properties. Many phytochemicals present in Noni like scopoletin, flavonoids, rutin, ursolic acid etc have the effective anti-inflammatory properties. Noni is a natural inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa beta, which mediates most inflammatory processes in the body.
Essential fatty acids : The essential fatty acids are shown to decrease production of bronchorestrictive leukotrienes by reducing production of arachidonic acid. Noni contains all the essential fatty acids.
