Bell's Palsy
Bell's palsy is a weakness or paralysis of the muscles that control expression on one side of our face. The disorder results from damage to one of a pair of facial nerves that run beneath each ear to the muscles in our face. The problem occurs at any age. Bell's palsy occurs more often in pregnant women, in people with diabetes or upper respiratory ailments like flu or a cold, and in people with conditions that compromise their immune system. Also called facial palsy, Bell's palsy is named for Dr. Charles Bell, a 19th-century surgeon from Scotland who first described the condition.
Causes
Each facial nerve controls all muscles on one side of our face, except for muscles involved in chewing. Many scientists believe that a viral infection perhaps most commonly by the herpes simplex virus, the same virus that causes cold sores, causes the facial nerve to become swollen and injured. Impairment of electrical impulses directed to our facial muscles by the damaged nerve results in the weakness or paralysis of these muscles. Most people with Bell's palsy recover completely within a few months, with or without medical treatment. For a few people, Bell's palsy can be severe or involve complications
Signs and Symptoms
- Sudden onset of paralysis or weakness on one side of our face, making it difficult to smile or close our eye on the affected side.
- Facial droop and difficulty with facial expressions.
- Facial stiffness or a feeling that our face is being pulled to one side.
- Pain behind or in front of our ear on the affected side.
- Sounds that seem louder on the affected side.
- Pain, usually in the ear on the affected side.
- Headache.
- Loss of taste on the front portion of our tongue.
- Changes in the amount of tears and saliva that our body produces.
Role of Noni in Bells Palsy
Noni contains all essential minerals in abundance like calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese etc.
Calcium
Calcium performs numerous vital functions in the body. It combines with phosphorus to strengthen bones and is crucial for nerve conduction, muscle contraction and heartbeat.
Magnesium
Magnesium is essential for every major biological process. It is necessary for 300+ enzymatic reactions and is vital for calcium metabolism. Magnesium is not a trace mineral but a major entity in our bodies.
Potassium
Potassium is necessary for transmission of nerve impulses that provide smooth coordinated muscle movement. Potassium also widens the blood vessels during exercise; thereby increasing blood flow to help carry away heat, and is used to convert blood glucose to glycogen. Noni is rich in potassium.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 prevents nerve damage by maintaining sheaths that cover them. The food contains abundant amount of B vitamins, in particular vitamin B12 and vitamin B3 (niacin), required for a well functioning nervous system. Vitamin B12 deficiency causes nerve degeneration.
Nerve tissue function partly depends on presence of various B vitamins in Vitamin B Complex 50 like Thiamin, Niacin and Pyridoxine. This may be a useful adjunct in the treatment of Bell's Palsy. Noni is rich in all vitamins including Vitamin B complex.
Essential fatty acids
The essential fatty acids are important in the maintenance of a healthy nervous system. Role of essential fatty acids within the body is an important link that can be utilized during supplemental period. These essential fatty acids are present naturally in Noni. This fatty acid helps the body combat inflammation and support the normal functioning of nervous system. Noni contains all essential fatty acids.
Immune modulating property of Noni
Bell's palsy is caused by a problem in the facial nerves that coordinate muscles. The actual mechanisms behind this problem remain a mystery and the sudden loss of muscle tone is still unexplained. The paralysis is a result of a swelling in the facial nerves because of an infection caused by a virus or because of immune system problem. Noni acts like an immune modulator and thus helps in bells palsy cases by its immune modulating property.
